Bobby Gene “Bob” Burgess, 89, of Owensboro, passed away on Friday, March 8, 2024 at Baptist Health Hospital in Lexington. He was born January 24, 1935 in Monticello, Wayne County and lived most of his life in Owensboro. Bobby was preceded in death by his 1st wife of 51 years, Mary Sue Burgess, brother Edwin Milton Burgess, sister Dorothy Faye Clark, and parents Edwin and Ollie Mae (Burnett) Burgess.
Bobby was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, sang in the choir for many years, and helped run the Episcopal All Saints Rough River campground. He was retired from Texas Gas Transmission Corporation as an Industrial Engineer and later in System Management. In retirement, he was involved with Habitat for Humanity and actively helped maintain the Joe Ford Nature Reserve Park in Daviess County. He loved the outdoors, boating, hiking, fishing, hunting, climbing trees (even at 80), gardening, golfing, loved fixing things, and spending time with family.
Bobby had been the president of the Audubon Society for several years and was involved in Boy Scouts of America in many roles over the years and earned the BSA Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor serving in BSA. He also held positions in Owensboro Rotary Club, was member of the Ohio Valley Management Club, and was a past member of the Owensboro Country Club.
Survivors include his current wife JoAnn Burgess (of eight years and nine months), his two sons and daughter and four grandchildren, the loving father of John Burgess, Thomas (Sarah) Burgess, and Kendall (John) Burgess-Moraitis; grandfather of Samuel, Andrew, Benjamin, and Theodore, and brother of Donald (Donna) Burgess. He is also survived by numerous relations in Kentucky and other states.
Funeral services will be Noon Friday, March 15, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with burial following in Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 PM until 7 PM Thursday and 10:30 AM until the time of the service on Friday at the funeral home.
Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Neal, Greg Clark, Randy Clark, and Donnie Burgess. The active pallbearers will be Tom Burgess, John Burgess, Samuel Burgess, Andrew Burgess, Benjamin Burgess, and Theodore Burgess.
