Russell Sturgeon

Russell Leroy Sturgeon, 83, of Owensboro passed away Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018, under the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky. He was born in Cloverport on Sept. 27, 1934, son of the late William Forest Sturgeon and Freida Gines Sturgeon. Russell loved God, life and his family. He retired from the Air Force, Alumax Aluminum and the Mary Kendall Home, was an avid UK basketball fan and enjoyed going to auctions. He was a member of Oddfellows 132 and the Masonic Lodge. He always played a big part in his grandchildren's lives. He coached and umpired baseball, and he never missed a game that they were in whether it be softball, baseball, soccer or football.
Russell also was preceded in death by his brother, John Francis Sturgeon.
Russell is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sheila "Stevie" Sturgeon; his daughters, Deborah (Gary) Daugherty, Julia (Byron) Spencer and Lisa (Gary) Sisk; grandchildren Holly (Chris) Pantle, Zackary (Wendy) Daugherty, Melissa Sisk, Michelle (Brad) Hayden, Jamie (Michael) King, Stephen (Caitlyn Garner) Howard, Christopher (Paige Elpers) Howard, Molly Spencer and Bryon Spencer; and 10 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his brothers, Joseph (Betty) Sturgeon and Rodney (Noreen) Sturgeon; his sister-in-law, Betty Jean Sturgeon; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Haley McGinnis Funeral Home & Crematory with Pastor Karla Fullwood officiating. Entombment will be in Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday
and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Wellington Parc for the excellent care provided Russell during his stay with them.
